For the second day in a row we have a provincial announcement of an H7N9 case, this time from Anhui Province. First the spartan report, then I'll have a bit more.

Maanshan new one cases of H7N9 influenza cases. Zhu patient, male, 62 years old, who Ma'anshan City, April 18 diagnosed before the onset of the history of exposure to live poultry market in a critical condition in a hospital treatment in Ma'anshan, Ma'anshan City has started joint prevention and control mechanism.

The province reported a total of 2016 cases of H7N9 influenza in 6 cases, 4 deaths. (Emergency Committee Office)

According to the local health ministry this makes the 6th H7N9 case reported out of Anhui Province in 2016, although you'd be hard pressed to know that based on official  reports.

Hong Kong's Avian Influenza report, updated today (see chart below) and based on official WHO reports, only shows 1 case from Anhui province since October of last year.

For well over a year now reporting on H7N9 cases out of China has been erratic, and often comes in the form of belated bulk releases by China's HFPC.  A few provinces still post brief announcements, like the one today, albeit sometimes inconsistently.

At some point - often a month or two after-the-fact - Beijing provides additional information to the WHO, and some of that ends up becoming publicly available.

But our day-to-day understanding of the level of H7N9, H5N1, and H5N6 activity in China is a far cry from what it was in 2013-2014.

That said,  FluTracker's H7N9 case listing has managed to pick up on four of the recent cases Anhui, and is waiting for confirmation on a fourth.   Today's case will be added later today.

Sharon Sanders and her team track H5N1, H5N6, H7N9, and MERS-CoV and provide the most complete, current, and detailed line listing I know of.   Highly recommended.
