China MOA: Large H5N6 Outbreak In Hunan Poultry

#11,477

As with human bird flu reporting, official announcements of poultry (or wild bird) outbreaks of avian flu in China tend to be sporadic, belated, and arguably incomplete.

Despite two recent human infections in Hunan Province (April & May), the last H5N6 filing with the OIE was in mid-March (follow-up report #14), and the last reported outbreak in Hunan Province was from early January.

Over the past twenty months the OIE report indicates only 34 outbreaks (see OIE map below), although how comprehensive this list really is remains unknown.

Since the first of the year, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has posted 8 epidemic notices, 6 of which have dealt with avian influenza outbreaks of various subtypes while two were related to FMD.

Today we have the first avian flu related announcement from the MOA in more than 3 months, that of an outbreak of H5N6 in Hunan Province poultry.

Ministry of Agriculture press office June 20 release, Hunan Sangzhi occurred in poultry of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

June 7, Sangzhi County, Hunan Province, a poultry farm fowl suspected bird flu symptoms appear, the incidence of 605, 293 died. June 12, animal disease prevention and control center in Hunan diagnosed as suspected bird flu. June 20, the National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory confirmed H5N6 subtype highly pathogenic bird flu.

After the outbreak, according to the relevant local plan and control technical specifications, a really good job epidemic disposal work. It has been carried out on 29 625 poultry culling and safe disposal. Currently, the outbreaks has been effectively controlled.

Exactly what criteria is used for deciding to report (or not report) outbreaks is difficult to discern.  But given how seldom we see announcements from the MOA, it seems worth noting.
